Specialist Pregnancy, Antenatal & Postnatal Physiotherapy Glasgow
Specialist Structural and Pelvic Recovery: From Bump, Birth, and Beyond
Pregnancy and childbirth place profound mechanical and physiological demands on your body. As your ligaments loosen, your posture shifts, and your core stretches, it is incredibly common to experience physical discomfort. However, these issues do not have to be "just part of pregnancy."
At Physio Effect, our specialised pre- and postnatal team—led by Mariam Kilpatrick and Jenny Devlin—combines advanced musculoskeletal (MSK) injury rehabilitation with post-graduate obstetric training. Based in North Glasgow within the Everyday Athlete (EDA) Gym, we provide evidence-based treatment to resolve pain, optimize birth preparation, and support a strong, phased return to fitness and running postpartum.
No Referral Necessary: Book directly with our expert female team for a compassionate, individualised assessment at any trimester or stage of your motherhood journey.
Our Pre-Natal & Post-Natal Specialist Services:
Specialist Pregnancy (Prenatal) Physiotherapy
We provide targeted physical therapy to help you remain comfortable, strong, and safely active throughout every trimester.
Conditions Treated: Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP), Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD), pregnancy-related lower back pain, sacroiliac (SIJ) joint dysfunction, thoracic tightness, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
The Clinical Approach: We use gentle manual therapies, Muscle Energy Techniques (METs), and targeted prenatal loading to rebalance your joints as your center of gravity shifts.
Specialist Postnatal Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation
Your recovery timeline does not have an expiration date. Whether you gave birth 6 weeks ago or 6 years ago, we help restore the integrity of your core, pelvic floor, and structural alignment.
Conditions Treated: Diastasis Recti (abdominal wall separation), pelvic floor weakness or leaking, pelvic organ prolapse (POP), and persistent post-birth hip, back, or tailbone (coccyx) pain.
The Clinical Approach: Guided by your specific birth experience (straightforward, assisted, or C-section), we design a sequential, safe recovery pathway back to the gym, lifting, or running.
Clinical Pregnancy & Postnatal Massage
Designed specifically to ease the unique muscular stresses of a changing body, improve circulation, and significantly reduce stress.
The Physio Effect Advantage: We utilize a specialized, professional pregnancy bolster cushion, allowing you to safely and comfortably lie face down during your treatment.
Specialty Physio-Led Pregnancy Exercise Classes
We don't just treat you on the clinic table; we bridge the gap into functional movement through our specialized, small-group rehabilitation classes held right here in our dedicated studio.
Antenatal Clinical Pilates: A physiotherapist-led modified Pilates class designed to maintain pelvic floor strength, stabilize your pelvis, and prepare your body mechanically for labor. Requires a brief 1:1 prep session with our team before starting.
Specialist postnatal Pilates class
"Crybaby" Postnatal Pilates: Our highly popular postnatal rehab block focusing on restoring your core, resolving abdominal separation, and rebuilding your pelvic floor. The added bonus? You are fully welcome to bring your pre-crawling baby along while you exercise.

Antenatal & Postnatal FAQs
-
For Antenatal Pilates, you can safely begin from your second trimester onwards, provided you have an uncomplicated pregnancy and your health practitioner approves. For Postnatal Physio and Crybaby Pilates, we recommend booking from 6 weeks postpartum following a straightforward vaginal delivery, or 8 weeks following a C-section or assisted birth to allow initial tissue healing.

Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) is an umbrella term for pain anywhere around the front or back pelvic joints. Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) is a specific type of PGP referring to irritation, pain, or a "clicking" sensation specifically at the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. Both respond exceptionally well to targeted physiotherapy and stabilization mechanics.

Yes, absolutely. A very common myth is that tummy gaps can only be closed immediately after birth. Diastasis Recti is a dysfunction of the deep core tension (the linea alba connective tissue). Through specialized, progressive loading and coordination training, we can significantly improve abdominal wall function and strength regardless of how old your children are.
