Shockwave therapy for GTPS and lateral hip pain Glasgow Physio Effect

Specialist Care for Lateral Hip Pain & Gluteal Tendinopathy

Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS) is a common, persistent condition characterized by pain on the outside of the hip. Often misdiagnosed as simple "hip bursitis," we now know that GTPS usually involves wear and tear of the gluteal tendons. At Physio Effect, we use Swiss Dolorclast® Shockwave Therapy to provide a fast-track solution for patients who find it painful to walk, run, or even sleep on their side.

Why is My Hip Pain So Persistent?

GTPS is an overuse injury where the tendons of the gluteal muscles become compressed against the hip bone (the greater trochanter). Because tendons have a limited blood supply, they can become stuck in a cycle of "failed healing."

Common Symptoms of GTPS:

  • Side-Lying Pain: Intense discomfort when lying on the affected hip at night.

  • Tendon Tenderness: Sharp pain when touching the bony point on the outside of your hip.

  • Activity-Related Pain: Pain that worsens with walking, climbing stairs, or running.

  • Post-Rest Stiffness: Difficulty getting moving after sitting for long periods.

How Shockwave Therapy Resolves Chronic Hip Pain

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is now considered one of the most effective non-invasive treatments for GTPS, specifically for those who haven't responded to cortisone injections or rest.

  1. Tissue Remodelling: The acoustic waves stimulate the production of new collagen, helping to "bulk up" and repair the thinning gluteal tendons.

  2. Increased Blood Flow: Shockwave triggers neovascularization, bringing essential nutrients to the hip tendons to support cellular repair.

  3. Desensitization: By modulating pain-transmitting chemicals (Substance P), Shockwave provides significant relief from the "aching" sensation typical of GTPS.

Your Pathway to Pain-Free Movement

We don't just treat the hip in isolation. We look at your movement as a whole to ensure the pain doesn't return.

  • Clinical Assessment: Our specialists, led by Danny Wray and Mariam Kilpatrick, will assess your pelvic stability and leg mechanics.

  • Shockwave Protocol: A standard course involves 3 to 5 sessions. Most patients report being able to sleep on their side again after just 2 sessions.

  • The Loading Phase: Once your pain is under control, we utilize the EDA Gym facility to strengthen your hip stabilizers, ensuring you can return to walking and running with confidence.
